This photo is of a calligrapher at Xi'an's Shuyuan Men near the south gate of the city's walls. My good friend, Richard, and I were enjoying coffee and chatting as we watched him work. Drinking coffee and discussing China and the world with Richard in many of Xi'an's best coffee shops were highlights of my trip.

Which begs the question, would your conversations with Richard have been as interesting and lively without the magic of coffee?
Caffeine is one of the best conversation-enhancing drugs out there! And we were certainly drinking some stiff brews! I have no doubt the conversation would've flowed fine no matter what, though.
